Library Program Policies for Seagraves Schools
It is the mission of the Seagraves Schools Library Program to aid in the development of well-prepared learners, provide effective school librarians, and create dynamic school libraries.
Our Common Beliefs are:
1. The school library is a unique and essential part of a learning community.
2. Qualified school librarians lead effective school libraries.
3. Learners should be prepared for college, career, and life.
4. Reading is the core of personal and academic competency.
5. Intellectual freedom is every learner’s right.
6. Information technologies must be appropriately integrated and equitably available.
Reading is a joy, a privilege, and the right of every student. As each student selects the library books that he/she will read, it is essential for our patrons to understand that not every book is the best choice for every student. If a book is unappealing or offensive to a student or parent in any way, the student should return it his/her library and select another book.
All students will be allowed to have 2 books checked out at a time. Exception will be made for secondary students during research projects. During these times, secondary students will be allowed a maximum of 3 books. Books may be renewed ONCE, giving students a total of 28 days in which to finish and return a book.
All Books are DUE for renewal or check in 2 weeks (14 days) after the initial check out date. Due Dates will be stamped in the front of the book by Library Staff when the book is checked out or renewed.
Fines: (Only assessed at grades 4-12)
Patrons are given a GRACE DAY on the day and the day after their DUE DATE in order to give reminders to the students. Fines begin accumulating on 3rd day after the Due DATE at a rate of $ .05/ book for each day that the book is overdue. Fines will be assessed on students in grades 3-12. Students may renew a current book or check in their current book(s) to stop a fine from further accumulation. Fines that reach $1.00 will be reported home through the mail and/or a phone call to parents or guardians. Patrons may not check out a new book while they have a fine.
Only students with a $0.00 fine balance will be allowed to check out new books. LOST books must be found and returned, or paid for in full before a student is allowed to check out a new book.
Any student who is unable to pay his/her fine or replacement cost for a book must first speak to the librarian privately to see if arrangements can be made. If the Librarian is unable to find a suitable arrangement, the students will be directed to discuss the issue with the building principal where further arrangements can be made.
The library staff STRONGLY ENCOURAGE recommendations of favorite, new, or outstanding literature and information resources by students, parents, staff, and community members. It is the desire of the library program to build a collection of materials and resources for our students that can be the pride of the whole community of Seagraves.
